General Notes: Husband - Isaac Ball
He and his wife were natives of Vermont, and among the pioneers of what is now Forest County, Pennsylvania, locating first in what is now Harmony township. There he conducted a saw-mill for a time, but afterward came to Hickory township, and there engaged in lumbering. In 1832 he located in Balltown, built a saw-mill and commenced lumbering. There he resided ten years, and then returned to Hickory township, where he erected a saw- and grist-mill, which he conducted until his death.
The progenitor of the Ball family (which is of English origin), arrived at Boston in 1635, where he located, and from whom the various American branches are descended. Representatives of these branches took part in the Revolutionary War, as well as the War of 1812, among those of the latter being Isaac Ball, a native of Vermont, who came into what is now Harmony Township, Forest County, where, at the close of the war, he began the manufacture of lumber. As early as 1823 he built the pioneer sawmill in the Tionesta Valley, at a place known for more than a century as Balltown, which became quite famous during the oil excitement. Later he returned to the Allegheny Valley, locating at East Hickory, where he erected the first grist mill in the vicinity, which he conducted in addition to the manufacturing of lumber, which he continued for many years.
