General Notes: Husband - Dickinson McAllister
was educated in the public schools of Rockville, Pennsylvania. In 1876, he went to New York with William F. Shunk, Civil Engineer, to learn the business, and was employed on the Metropolitan East Side Railroad, then building, with Mr. Shunk, as Chief Engineer of Construction. Upon the completion of the road he was for a short time in the employ of the Brooklyn Elevated road, and during the year 1889, by the Johnson Street Railway, at Johnstown, Pennsylvania. During the flood at Johnstown that year, he narrowly escaped being present at the disaster. Of 36 boarders at the Hotel Hurlburt, where he made his home, only two escaped with their lives, nothing was left of the building. He was thrown out of employment by the flood, and later became the Assistant Engineer in the construction of the Chicago South Side Elevated Railroad, which he helped to finish in time for the World's Fair. Later he was the Chief Engineer of the Metropolitan West Side Elevated Railroad; in January, 1897, he was appointed Receiver of this railroad.
