He was reared on the farm, receiving his education in the common school and in Bloomfield Academy. His first business venture was as a clerk in a dry goods store in Logansport, Indiana, where he remained six years. He then went East and clerked for two years; subsequently embarked in mercantile trade at Mount Holly Springs, Pennsylvania, where he conducted a general store.
He was a Democrat in politics. He was appointed postmaster in 1885, and served as treasurer of Mount Holly Springs. He was a member of the K. of P.
