In the autumn of 1863 he was taken sick with a complication of diseases and was confined to his bed for eight years. Thereafter he was obliged to use crutches. He followed farming for fifteen years and served as township treasurer for three years. Mr. McCreary was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, and in politics, like all the rest of the McCrearys, was a staunch Republican.
