General Notes: Husband - John McElwain
New Lebanon, PA
He was born in French Creek Twp, Mercer County, PA. [HMC 1877, 134]
He was born on a farm settled by his father about the year 1806. From early boyhood to his twenty-first year, he worked by the day, and month, to help support a large family, early bereft of a mother's tender care. In 1838, he started out on his own account, seventy-five cents constituting his entire capital. He walked from his home to Sharon, a distance of thirty miles, without dinner, paid fifty cents for his supper and lodging, arose with the lark on the suc-ceeding morning, and hired to a house-joiner, before breakfast, at thirteen dollars per month. Here he continued for a period of eleven years. In 1849, he was stricken down with a malignant kidney disease; but, nothing daunted, he mounted crutches, and went to teaching music and canvassing for books, in order to support his family. He then purchased a small farm, with the fruits of his economy. In April, 1852, he sold his farm advantageously, and then embarked in the merchandising, farming, and stock-raising business. Accurate knowledge, a venturesome disposition, and a quick mer-cantile apprehension, enabled him to spread his operations with the best results, until he became one of the wealthiest men in that part of the county.
