He was born in Pine Township, Mercer County, PA, and was educated at the common schools. In 1861 he enlisted in Company I, One Hundred and Third Pennsylvania Volunteers, and served until the close of the war, receiving wounds at the battles of Fair Oaks and Kingston, N. C. After the close of the war he returned and worked at stone masonry for a number of years; followed the oil excitement through various counties of the State, and then was engaged in conducting a farm at Grove City, and working at his trade. He was a member of Marion Craig Post No. 325, G. A. R., and the A. O. U. W. He and his family were members of the Presbyterian Church.
