His early boyhood was spent in assisting his father in the lime business. In 1861 he opened a store in Maxville, and continued to engage in mercantile pursuits until the spring of 1882, when, having disposed of his stock and property, he removed to Logan, Hocking County, Ohio, there to enjoy that for which he had labored.
