After his marriage he located on the old Wallace farm, situated about two miles east of Florence, in Hanover township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and gave his entire atten­tion to general farming and stock-raising, in which he was very successful. Politically he was originally a Whig, later a Republican, and was one of the influential men of his party, which he served in various local offices. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, in which he was very active, having been a member of Session, of which he officiated as clerk for more than twenty-five years. He was also clerk of the board of trustees for more than twenty years.
