General Notes: Husband - David McConnell
He and his wife were among the Scotch-Irish settlers who crossed the Alleghenies into Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, after the close of the Revolutionary war. Like hundreds of others they came from Ireland just before the war, stopped for one generation in Lancaster County and then joined in the new movement to the backwoods. Having arrived in Westmoreland County they took up a large tract of land lying along the Whitehorn, a branch which puts into Loyalhanna creek some miles below New Alexandria. To David McConnell were born twelve children, all of whom lived to marry.
He married and lived in Colerain township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, until 1800, when he moved to Salem township, Westmoreland County. He and his wife had a family of twelve children, all of whom lived to maturity and reared families, except one, who died in infancy. They nearly all located in western Pennsylvania, but some also dispersed throughout the northern and western states.
In May, 1905, there were living of David McConnell's lineal descendants four ministers, of whom Rev. Samuel D. McConnell, D.D., LL.D., and Rev. David McConnell Steel, both of New York city, were two; four lawyers, of whom two were judges, and five physicians. Of the families of the four sons of David McConnell, three of them were, for many years, represented in the Eldership of Congruity Presbyterian church.
