He learned harness-making in his father's shop when a young man and worked at that trade ever after.
After marriage he and his wife lived in Dayton, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, where he was post master for a few years. They moved to Ebenezer, Pennsylvania, in 1860, where he was post master for many years. During the Civil War he commanded Company C, 206th Reg. Pa. Vol.
