He was reared on the old homestead in Butler County, PA, and there attended school and learned the carpen­ter's trade, which he followed for ten years in Oakmont and Worthington. In April, 1910, he embarked in the general merchandise business in the latter place, and successfully continued it until he removed to Pittsburgh.
