In 1818 he made his way on foot to Beaver County, Pennsylvania, where he located in Big Beaver township, near the present town of New Galilee. He was the owner of a blacksmith's shop there for many years, then bought a nearby farm of three hundred and fifty-nine acres, on which his son, William J., later lived.
