General Notes: Husband - Matthew L. McClure

He was born at Homestead, Pennsylvania, where he received his education and learned the trade of carpenter. In September, 1862, he enlisted in Co. H, 14th P. C., and served with his regiment under Gens. Hunter, Averill and Sheridan in the Army of Western Virginia. At the close of the war he returned home, and was clerk for his father in the county recorder's office; then engaged in the lumber business in Pittsburgh some three years; then worked at his trade in Erie County, Pennsylvania, until 1874, when he returned to Pittsburgh and kept books for a wholesale grocery until 1879. Following this he was engaged at his trade, and in the planing-mill at Homestead.
He was one of the administrators of his father's estate, and was councilman and assessor of Homestead. He and his wife were members of the First Presbyterian Church, Homestead.

At the age of sixteen he began as apprentice at the carpenter trade under his father, and continued at this vocation until Sept. 28, 1862, when he became a soldier in the Civil War, enlisting as a private in Company H, 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry, where he served until the close of the war, being honorably discharged May 30, 1865. During the war he fought with distinction in the battles of Rocky Gap, Droop mountain, Winchester, Martinsburg, Strausburg, Lynchburg and others. He was present at the burning of Chambersburg, and was among those who pursued and punished those who were responsible for the burning of that city. After his return home, Mr. McClure was for three years engaged in the manufacture of boxes in Pittsburgh, returning to his vocation as a carpenter, which he followed for several years in Erie County. About 1878 he became a contractor and builder, and was successfully engaged in this work in Homestead until 1888. Following this he gave all his attention to his profession as an architect, and has met with flattering success. Mr. McClure designed the First National bank building, the McClure building and many of the finest residences in Homestead, and his field covered all the territory along the Monongahela river as far as Monongahela City.
Mr. McClure and his family were members of the Presbyterian church, of which Mr. McClure was for several years an elder. He was a member of Alexander Hayes post, No. 3 , G. A. R., of Pittsburgh, and Encampment No. 1, Union Veteran legion, of Pittsburgh. In politics he was a republican.
