General Notes: Husband - Hugh Stright Miller

His life was closely associated with that of Howard Rowland who came to Albuquerque, New Mexico, for a wedding after the First World War. He liked the country and so stayed and bought into a partnership in a store at San Ysidro, four miles south of Jemez Pueblo. At that time Hugh was working with a contractor and met Mr. Rowland.
Later Mr. Rowland went on a camping trip and found a place he liked four miles north of Jemez Springs which he bought. The property consisted of 40 acres of land but had only one log shanty on it. Hugh built all the other buildings on the place consisting of large dining room, barns, residence, and guest houses. Mr. Rowland lived there 36 years. A man and his wife who were caretakers quit on July 4, 1939 and Hugh was asked to help out. After several couples had come and gone, Howard, who had been a cook in the army, became the cook with Hugh caring for the other work.
In 1959 Howard became ill, sold the property and moved to Albuquerque. At Howard's death the town property, located at 3403 Rio Grande Blvd., which consisted of a large main house and a well equipped guest house, was given to Hugh for his use during his lifetime, After his death it was to go to a niece and eventually to Bataan Memorial Hospital. Hugh lived in the guest house and rented the main residence. When he died, he left most of his estate to the Presbyterian Church at Jemez Springs where he was a life long member and where his mother served as a missionary many years before.
He served in the First World War in Hq 3rd, Bn 329th Infantry from August 27, 1918 to July 12, 1919. He served overseas from Oct. 31, 1918, to July 12, 1919.
He is buried in a grave adjacent to his parents in the Presbyterian cemetery behind Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in Jemez Springs.
