General Notes: Husband - Lafayette George McClelland
He accompanied his parents from Venango County to Mercer County, PA, in 1864, being then a lad of five years. After receiving a thorough education in the public schools of Sandy Lake Township and at the Sandy Lake high school and Fredonia Institute, he commenced his career as a teacher. He was one of the first instructors at the Sandy Lake Institute, where he was engaged for two years, and altogether taught for twenty-eight years (thirty terms) in Mercer County. After his son had grown to man's estate his agricultural interests occupied less of his time than formerly, and he was able to devote himself more assiduously than ever to his work as an educator. He was also called to serve in such local offices as that of tax collector, and in later years devoted his talents largely to the support and propagation of the Prohibition cause. In 1908 he was a candidate on that ticket for state representative. [HMC 1909, 852]
