He was a nephew of Alexander McClean, who was a pioneer surveyor of lands in western Pennsylvania.

In 1817 went to Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, to live with one of his sons on a farm about two miles from Noblestown. Blindness beclouded the last year of his life.
