General Notes: Husband - Samuel McClay
He was born in Ireland, and, at the tender age of ten years, resolved to seek his fortune in the New World. Embarking on a sailing vessel, he commenced his voyage to America, and after a stormy passage of many weeks landed at New York; thence proceeded to Pennsylvania, where he worked out his passage, as was the custom of the time. (The transportation companies would bind out their passengers until their wages had paid the expenses of the passage across the ocean.) When he had paid the debt, he commenced life for himself, and settled in Chester County. He married and they remained in Chester County until they had accumulated a little wealth, and then removed to Washington County, where they purchased a small tract of land (110 acres), which they at once engaged in clearing and improving. Their children managed this part of the work, as his health began to fail, and he had to occupy himself in the less arduous business of teaming and stock trading.
The entire family were active and zealous members of the Covenanter Church. In politics, he was active in the interests of the Whig party.
He emigrated to America about 1800, and in 1808 located in Washington County, Pennsylvania. On the 24th of November in that year he purchased one hundred and one acres of land of Alexander Patterson, situated on Brush Run, a branch of Buffalo Creek. This land was part of a tract which was warranted to Henry Martin, and surveyed as "Labrador," and for which a patent was granted March 22, 1788. [HWC 1882, 690]
