He was born on the old family homestead, one mile from Smithton, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and there passed his life. As a young man he taught for a few terms in the county schools, but his decided inclination was for agricultural pursuits and these he finally decided to make his life-work. The old family farm, under his management became highly productive and ranked among the best in the county.
He was a man of culture and wide reading and many of his leisure hours were passed in his library, which was rich in standard literature.
