General Notes: Husband - Andrew Mellon

He married and was already a man of family at the time his father sailed to America [1816], and when his own eldest son, Thomas, was about five years of age, he concluded to follow the example of his parents and other members of the family in going to America, and in 1818 sailed with his wife and child for Saint John, New Brunswick, direct intercourse with ports in the United States being then difficult, if not impossible, owing to the unfriendly mood of England after the war of 1812-15. This voyage, made in a sailing vessel, consumed about three months, and was followed by another, made in a coasting vessel, to Baltimore, at which port landing was effected October 1, 1818. Two days in Baltimore sufficed to give the family all the rest they needed, and to enable him to charter a Conestoga wagon and team of horses to convey them to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.

In 1819, he and his father, and their families, removed from Unity township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, to Franklin township, where they lived until 1833, when they settled in Allegheny County.
He was one of the first four elders of "Cross-Roads" Presbyterian Church, which was organized May 6, 1836, and ceased to act in 1841, when he removed into Allegheny County.

When he left the "Crabtree Farm," in Unity township, he settled on the one in Franklin township later held by P. Kline and P. Pifer, a short distance north of Remaley's (later Stark's) mill. Here an incident occurred to his son, Thomas Mellon, judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County, and the senior partner of "T. Mellon & Sons' Bank" of Pittsburgh, that changed the whole course of the future life of the then young lad. When ten years of age he happened into the log cabin of a neighbor to escape a shower of rain, and while there picked up a much dilapidated copy of the "Life of Doctor Franklin, written by himself." He borrowed it, and that old blurred volume, not bigger than a spelling-book, changed the whole course of his subsequent life. It kindled his ambition for knowledge, useful knowledge, and its maxims became the foundation of his professional and business life. Had it not been for this trivial circumstance Judge Mellon would probably have spent his life quietly and laboriously in cultivating one of those poor farms in his old neighborhood.

General Notes: Wife - Rebecca Wauchob

Her ancestors came from Holland when William, Prince of Orange, left his native land to become King of England. In their Irish home the Wauchobs were prominently identified with local affairs.
