General Notes: Husband - Joseph Newcomer

He received a common school education. At the age of sixteen he apprenticed himself to his brother John to learn the shoemaker's trade, which he followed during the winter, working in the summer for neighboring farmers. March 6, 1871, he engaged in the railroad business, being employed on the section work of the Pittsburg & Connellsville Railroad. One year later he worked for four months on the gravel train, and then went back to work on the section on the Oakdale division of the Pittsburg & Connellsville Railroad. At the end of eight months he was given charge of the section at Dawson, where he remained two months, being then removed to West Newton, and there given charge of a floating gang. Some three months later the panic of 1873 struck the country, and the floating gangs were all taken off the railroads. In consequence Mr. Newcomer went to Smithton, and for some eight months laid tracks for the Waverly Coal & Coke Company. On June 1, 1874, he took charge of the Jacobs Creek section on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, and continued to serve the company at that section for twenty-four years and six months. In 1888 he was awarded a cash premium, and in 1887-94 a certificate of distinction for the best sections on the road. In December, 1898, he severed his connection with the railroad and began to lay motor tracks for the Morgan, Moore & Bain Coal Company. One year later he resigned this position in order to accept a better one with the Pittsburg Coal Company, his work being to lay tracks at the Eureka mines. He retained this position three years and four months, and April 1, 1903, took charge of section No. 24 on the Pennsylvania & Lake Erie Railroad, his station being between Jacobs Creek Scales and Whitset Junction.
Mr. Newcomer was the owner of no fewer than seven residence properties in Jacobs Creek. While living in Perry township, Fayette County, he served four years on the school board, and after his removal to Westmoreland County was for six years secretary of the school board in his new home. He belonged to the Ancient Order United Workmen, and the Knights of Malta. His political affiliations were with the Democratic party, and he was a member of the Baptist church.
