General Notes: Husband - Robert Mehaffey
He was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, and set sail about the year 1800 for the Western Hemisphere, landing at New York after a lengthy voyage. From "Gotham" he proceeded to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where for some time he rented and worked a farm. About the year 1816 he moved from Lancaster County to Washington County, Pennsylvania, where he leased the McDowell farm in Buffalo township, along the National pike, and here remained some years, after which he came to Donegal township, settling on a farm about four miles northwest of Claysville. Here he followed agricultural pursuits during the remainder of his busy life.
It was in the harvest-field, and he had just completed a stack of hay, and was sliding to the ground, when a wooden fork which had been placed, prongs upward, against its side, penetrated his bowels. He was carried to the shade of a tree, and in a few hours the strong man, in the prime of life, was dead. The mother, left with seven children, the youngest but a little over one year old, on a small farm, managed not only to exist, but to live well, and there her children acquired those sterling principles and practical knowledge which form the basis of most successful business lives.
