He attended the country schools, helped his father, and also worked at the carpenter's trade for some years. He was twenty-seven years of age when he left Indiana County, Pennsylvania, and moved to Falls Creek, in Clearfield County, where he resided for eight years and then spent four years at Pittsburgh and one year at Indiana, where he learned the concrete and paving business, with his brother, Archie McQuown. After 1908 he did a large business in this line at DuBois, giving employment to four men and having the contracts for the greater part of all the public work. He invested in real estate there and built a fine modern residence on Piffer street.
