He attended public school un-til he was about sixteen years old. He then entered school at State Line, but leaving in a short time returned home, and took charge of the homestead which he improved to a considerable extent, operating it during the summer, and in the winter he worked in a rolling mill, in the oil fields, at teaming, etc. He continued to divide his time in this way until 1898, when he began teaching school, having prepared himself for this profession in his spare moments. For six years he taught in Armstrong county, and then accepted a position as traveling salesman with a Pittsburgh house, continuing in its employ for a year. In 1908 he moved to East Franklin township, Armstrong County, on a place which continued to be his home until June, 1911, when he changed to a valuable farm he had purchased in the same township, about two and a half miles from the city.
From the time he cast his first vote Mr. Meals was prominent in Republican politics, and in 1904 was elected justice of the peace, serving for five years. In 1905 he was elected county commissioner, and reelected to that office in 1908. On Aug. 22, 1911, he was elected chairman of the Republican county central committee to fill the vacancy caused by the death of J. H. McFarland, and reelected for two-year term in 1912.
He was manager of and a stockholder in the Kittanning Telephone Company. He was a Mason, belonging to Blue Lodge No. 244, Kittanning; Orient Chapter, No. 247, R. A. M.; Pittsburgh Commandery, K. T.; and the Coudersport Consistory; and was also a member of the Odd Fellows at Craigsville, Pennsylvania, the Order of United American Mechanics, and the Elks at Kittanning.
He attended the public schools and Slate Lick Academy. He taught school for six years, after which he engaged in various kinds of industry, such as farming; afterwards he became the owner of several coal mines in the neighborhood of Kittanning. From 1906 to 1912 he was county commissioner of Armstrong County. From 1912 to 1920 he was superintendent of State highways for Armstrong County. In 1919 he became one of the organizers and vice-president of the Kittanning Limestone Company; he also was made general manager. The Kittanning Limestone Company was organized by a group of men in Armstrong County for the purpose of mining and manufacturing limestone and its products. Its plant was located about one mile and a half north of Kittanning, and comprised about four hundred acres of land. The company employed upwards of one hundred persons, and its products were sent to all points within a radius of one hundred and fifty miles. The growth of the business was gradual but steady, beginning with five carloads a day and increasing to twenty car loads.
Mr. Meals was also president of the Kittanning Telephone Company.
Mr. Meals was a member of Lodge No, 244, Free and Accepted Masons; of the Royal Arch Chapter; Pittsburgh Commandery, No. 1, Knights Templar; of Coudersport Consistory, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite; of Syria Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine; of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows; of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; was vice-president of the Rotary Club; a director of the Chamber of Commerce; and a member of the Kittanning Country Club.
