He was born near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and was reared in Buffalo township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, whither his parents moved when he was a child. Soon after his marriage he purchased a farm in East Finley township, Washington County, where he made a permanent home.
In politics he was originally a Whig, but later became a member of the Democratic party. He was a member of the Upper Ten-Mile Church at Prosperity, of which he was an elder.
