A native of Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, in 1837 he and his wife removed to Richland township, Venango County, where they reared their family.
By occupation he was a farmer, and in political sentiment was first a Whig and later a Republican. He and his wife were faithful members of the Lutheran Church.
