He received his early education in the public schools, and at the age of fourteen years engaged in general labor, which he followed until he was twenty-six years of age, when he worked at shoemak­ing for five years; he then bought a farm, which he cultivated for fourteen years and finally, in 1901, settled in Leeper, where he entered mercantile business. He also owned a farm in Farming­ton township. He was a Republican in politics, and was for several terms the supervisor of North Farmington township.
