He was reared to manhood on the homestead in Dry valley, in Pennsylvania, and attended the schools of that district. In the earlier part of his life he worked on the home farm, and when his father died, he succeeded to the place. Shortly after this, he consolidated his interests with his brother, working their properties jointly, the result was most abundant success. The Mitchell farms came to be among the finest and best regulated in the county.
He was an ardent Democrat. Both he and his wife were members of the Presbyterian church at Vira, Mr. Mitchell serving as trustee for many years.
