General Notes: Husband - John A. McNary
He
was born on his father's farm, eight miles south of Pittsburgh, in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. As a boy of seventeen he began learning the trade of a roll turner in the Phoenix Roll shops at Pittsburgh, serving an apprenticeship of four years, and then for seven years he followed that business for himself. Coming to Greenville, Pennsylvania, in 1880 he became associated as a roll turner with the firm of Kimberley, Carnes and Company, and remained with that corporation for a number of years, finally resigning his position to organize, in June of 1894, a steam laundry. But selling his laundry in 1903, he became a chemical manufacturer and organized the John A. McNary Chemical Manufacturing Company.
When twenty-one years of age Mr. McNary was made a Mason, joining Laradeth Lodge No. 448 at Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania, but demitting from that he became a member of Eureka Lodge No. 290, F. & A. M., and he was a charter member of Mound Chapter No. 212, R. A. M. He also demitted from Rebecca Commandery, K. T., at Sharon, and became a charter member of Mt. Calvary Commandery No. 67, K. T., at Greenville. He was a charter member of Greenville Lodge No. 145, B. P. O. E., and was elected its first exalted ruler and re-elected for a second term.
In politics he is allied with the Democracy, and for three years, beginning in 1901, he served as a member of the Greenville council, later he served as the burgess of the borough, being elected in February, 1906. [HMC 1909, 391]
