He came to America and for a time engaged in the shoe business in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania. He had a son John, who ran away from home at the age of fifteen to enlist in the Union Army. He was brought back by his father, but ran away again, reenlisted, and was with General Sherman in his "March to the Sea," serving in all three years.
