General Notes: Husband - John Crawford Porter

---

He accepted the position of superintendent of the Penn Cotton Mills, Pittsburgh, North Side, in 1850. When the Civil War began he resigned to enter the army, serving three years in the Army of the Potomac. At the close of the war he established the Porter Foundry and Machine Company, of which organization he was president until his death.

She was totally blind for a number of years before her death. She learned to read by the Braille system and occupied herself in writing descriptive verses of early Pittsburgh days and in song writing, some of which were set to music by Mr. Gunther.
