He was born in Hempfield township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania,, near Madison. He lived there all his life, giving his attention to farming and distill-ing. Later he gave up distilling and gave his entire attention to agricultural pur-suits. In politics he was a staunch Democrat, and in religious faith a member of the Lutheran church.
