He attended the public schools of Manor borough, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and later prepared for college at the Greensburg Seminary, Greensburg. He graduated from Franklin and Marshall College with the class of 1907, and immediately took up his studies in the law office of Charles C. Crowell, Esq., a prominent attorney of Greensburg. He was admitted to the Westmoreland County bar, April 26, 1910. He was a Democrat in politics, and in his religious belief, a member of the Reformed Church in the United States.
