He was reared on a farm, and received his education at the log school house. At seventeen years of age he began learning the tanner's trade, serving three years. He followed the trade twenty-five years. Retiring from that business he purchased some five hundred acres of land, situated in several different tracts, and being mostly underlaid with coal. In political preference he was a Republican.
