He lived on the paternal farm in his youth, attended the public schools, and soon after his marriage, bought a farm near Wurtemberg, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, which he cultivated until his death. He and his (second) wife both died of fever.
He was a member of the Covenanter Church, to which his family also belonged.
