His parents were natives of Ireland, and came to America in the first half of the 1700s.

He was born in York County, Pennsylvania, where he learned cloth dressing. He then moved to Beaver County, and there followed his trade for several years, finally settling on a farm in Washington County.
He and his wife were the parents of three children; Robert was the eldest.
