After completing his schooling he commenced the milling business under his father at Adamsville, PA, and after his parents’ death continued to operate the plant until 1906, when it was destroyed by fire. In that year he removed to Jamestown and entered into partnership with George E. McQuiston, under the firm name of George E. McQuiston and Company. He was also interested in a mill at Hadley, of which his son was the active manager.
