General Notes: Husband - Hon. Samuel R. Mason
He was educated in the country schools, given private instruction by David Martin, a minister of the United Presbyterian Church, and in Allegheny College, at Meadville, Pennsylvania, graduating from that institution in 1849. He read law with Hon. John Hoge, of Mercer, was admitted to the bar in 1852, and subsequently formed a partnership with Hon. Samuel Griffith, which firm became one of the best known in Western Pennsylvania. He was elected district attorney for Mercer County, Pennsylvania, in 1854, and was one of the commissioners who built the union schools of Mercer. In 1878 he was nominated and made the race for governor of Pennsylvania on the Greenback ticket. After this he threw his influence with the Republicans. He was one of the trustees of the insane asylum of Warren, was a director of the New Castle & Franklin Railroad, and was the attorney for the B., N. Y. & P. and Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroads. He and wife were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Mercer.
The oldest practicing attorney of the Mercer bar at the present time [1909] is Samuel R. Mason. He was admitted to the Mercer county bar, March 20, 1852. He is regarded with distinguishing honor by his associates at the bar, who celebrated his semi-centennial of law practice by a banquet. His is always a seat of honor in the meetings of the Bar Association. He was born in Mercer county, March 1, 1827, was a school teacher after his own period of training was completed, and in 1850 began the study of law under John Hoge, then state senator and one of the ablest lawyers of this section of the state. He was associated in practice with Samuel Griffith twelve years, but for the past thirty years has practiced alone. He has made a specialty of corporation law and divides his time between his practice and his duties as a member of several state boards of charity. During the seventies Mr. Mason became so influentially concerned with the organization of the Greenback political movement that he was called the “father of the Greenback party in Western Pennsylvania.” He was the Greenback nominee for governor in 1878. He has held various public offices and also many offices of trust. He married in 1853 Miss Jennie Smith, and they had seven children. Shortly after the anniversary of his admission to the bar was celebrated, he and his wife celebrated their golden wedding. [HMC 1909, 201]
