Guy M. Rodgers, 90, Cooperstown historian
Guy Mason Rodgers, 90, of Second Street, Cooperstown, well-known as an historian and for his genealogical studies, died at 12:35 p.m. Monday in the Franklin Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.
He was born at Donation Hill, near Cooperstown, on June 19, 1894, a son of Oscar D. and Nettie Mason Rodgers.
He was graduated from Cooperstown High School and later attended Pennsylvania State University for a short time, with a particular interest in agriculture.
But he soon moved into the borough of Cooperstown where he worked in the hardware store. In 1930, he became a partner in the Wygant General Store and six years later became the sole owner of that business.
He continued to operate the store until 1947 when he sold the business.
Mr. Rodgers had a keen interest in history and throughout the Cooperstown area was looked upon as an authority on the past of that region. Much of the material he had gleaned from that area over years of research and collecting were included in the History of Cooperstown Area, published in 1976 as part of the Bicentennial celebration.
He also was a genealogist and worked on tracing his own and several other family histories. Research was something he thoroughly enjoyed and he worked diligently on his records and the continual checking of family and historical data.
He became interested in the soldiers who served in the War of 1812 and in 1960 started a project to mark all those graves in Canal, Jackson, Cornplanter, Plum, Cherrytree, Oakland and Sugarcreek Townships with bronze stars and small flags.
In his research he learned that a number of veterans' graves were not recognized and he made it a personal project for many years to put flags on the graves on Memorial Day.
Mr. Rodgers was not only interested in the past, but he had a deep loyalty to the present day activities in Cooperstown and over the years he had held many positions which required considerable time and effort to fulfill. He was secretary of Cooperstown Borough for many years, was secretary-treasurer for the Cooperstown Library; treasurer of the Cooperstown Volunteer Fire Department and of that company's Relief Association.
He was also the oldest member of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church.
He was married in 1918 to the former Alice Rebekah Rogers and she died in 1960. On May 2, 1967, he married the former Margaret Mason Belfield and she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Samuel G. and John C. Rodgers, both of Cooperstown; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
One son, Theodore Rodgers, is deceased.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Robert W. Gardinier Funeral Home with the Rev. Joseph Martin, pastor of Cooperstown United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be In Cooperstown Cemetery.
