He was reared on his father's farm, receiving his education in the common schools. For three years he was engaged in the express business in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but farming was his principal occupationl For some years he conducted a dairy. He had fifteen pure-blooded Jerseys and his product averaged twenty-five gallons daily. In politics he was a Republican. He and his family were members of the Presbyterian church.
