General Notes: Husband - William Henry Martin
He was a school director of his township, and in religion a member of the U. P. Church, of which he was an elder. In 1884 he and his brother [Matthew?] erected a handsome dwelling. Their farm consisted of over 400 acres of land, situated five miles east of Washington borough, in South Strabane township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. The brothers devoted a great deal of time to stock raising, and owned about eight hundred fine Black-Top Merino sheep. This farm was patented to Jacob Shively, in 1786. The patentee sold to Peter Martin in 1811, and it was in the Martin family thereafter.
He was educated in the local schools and devoted himself mainly to agricultural pursuits through life, making a specialty of sheep raising. After marriage he settled on a farm situated five miles east of Washington, Pennsylvania, and improved the place with substantial buildings. He was often elected to township offices of trust and responsibility. He was one of the directors of the Western Pennsylvania Fair Association and through his interest in agriculture and stock raising, added largely to their importance in his neighborhood.
