General Notes: Husband - James Rose
In the month of September, 1798, James and Ephraim Rose, brothers, came from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and settled on a 400-acre tract, in the west part of Pine township, Mercer County. The farm was later owned by James Rose, Jr., and was one of the finest in the neighborhood, which abounded in fine farms and excellent improvements. James Rose was a lad of fourteen years when he came, and his brother was twenty. They built a cabin and a stable, and wintered on the place. They had brought a considerable supply of provisions with them, but, as both were expert with the rifle, they depended on it, to a great extent, for their supply of meat. Young James became very expert at deer-hunting. They also commenced a clearing on the place the same season they came. In the spring of the following year, 1799, their father came out, and brought with him his other four sons. They put in their first grain in 1799, and Mr. Rose, that season, also built him a larger house, enlarged his stables, and made all necessary arrange-ments for entertaining travelers over night, although he did not keep a regular tavern. He was the first one of the family who died, after their removal to Mercer county. [HMC 1877, 60]
He became an ironmaster, and he participated in the War of 1812. [BAFC, 501]
