He owned part of his father's farm and made his home there. He and his father were associated in the dairy business for ten years, and he later engaged in teaching, which profession he followed for some time before his marriage, resuming it after several years in other work. He was a member of the 16th Regiment, Pennsylvania National Guard, and later took great interest in the Boy Scout movement, being a district director and often taking charge of a squad of boys out camping.
