General Notes: Husband - Dr. Thomas "Judge" McKee

He was born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and removed to Westmoreland County in boyhood, where he resided until 1796, when he came to Venango County and took up a tract of four hundred acres of land then covered with the primeval forest. A portion of this tract is now embraced in the borough of Clintonville. In 1805 he was chosen as one of the first associate judges of Venango County, and filled the office with credit and ability over thirty years. He was also a justice of the peace in his township for a long period. Judge McKee was one of the most enterprising men of the county throughout the earlier years of its history. He erected one of the pioneer saw mills of his locality and carried on quite an extensive local lumber trade. He was also interested largely in real estate, and accumulated a great deal of valuable land.

He was a boy when his family moved from Franklin County, Pennsylvania, to Westmoreland County, where he lived until his settlement in Venango County in 1797. Having adopted the profession of surveyor, he came to this county in 1796 looking for opportunities for such employment, and was engaged on the survey of much of the land in the county west of Allegheny. For himself he acquired a tract of four hundred acres in what became Clinton Township and embracing the site of the borough of Clintonville. In enterprise and public spirit he was not exceeded by any of the other residents of this section in his day. His business ventures included extensive operations in the purchase and sale of local lands, but he also had large lumber interests, built one of the first sawmills in the vicinity, and was one of the first merchants. The first wagon in the township was brought here by him in 1809. He took a leading part in public affairs, serving a number of years as justice of the peace in his township, and for over thirty years he was one of the associate judges of Venango County, he and John Irwin being the first appointees to such position in the county. Their names appear in the records of the first court ever held at Franklin, in 1805. Mr. McKee and his family were Presbyterians, and for many years he was one of the ruling elders of the Scrubgrass Church, later helping to organize the Clintonville Church, of which he was one of the first ruling elders. He was a stanch Democrat on political questions. [CAB, 597]
