General Notes: Husband - John Welsh, Sr.
He was a native of Ireland, and immigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with his family early in the nineteenth century. He had learned the baker's trade in his native land, and soon after coming to Philadelphia he established himself in that business, and carried it on for many years. In 1821 came to Butler County and purchased 300 acres of land from his brother, Thomas, located in what is now Jefferson township. Thomas had settled there two years previous, and bought a large tract of land. John remained on this farm until his death, and both he and wife were buried in this township.
He emigrated to America in 1815, settling at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he followed his trade of baker. In 1821 the Welsh family moved to Butler County and John Welsh purchased 300 acres of land, which he subsequently cleared. He possessed more capital than did many of his neighbors, lived better and built the first two-story frame residence ever erected in that section of Jefferson Township. When he died, full of years, he was buried in the family graveyard on his own land. [TCHBC, 1117]
He settled near Jefferson Center, Butler County, in 1821. He had a family of seven children, of whom three daughters were still living in 1883. His son Thomas succeeded him in the possession of the farm.
