In 1936 he finished visiting the highest peak or highest elevation in each of the 48 states and thus was the first man to accomplish such a feat. He climbed mountains of over 14,000 feet thirty-one times in the United States, and the twenty peaks climbed in 1941 brought the total number climbed to 534 named peaks.
