Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co, PA - a jeweler
He was born in Washington, Pennsylvania, attended school and lived there until 1846 when he went to Pittsburgh, where he worked for a short time as a journeyman for John Craig and W. W. Wilson. In 1847 he went into business for himself as a jeweler. In 1849 his father joined him and they formed a partnership under the firm name of James R. Reed & Co., Jewelers, for the manufacture and sale of jewelry, watches, clocks and mathematical instruments. The first store was at 36 Smithfield Street. They later moved to Third Street, and then to Fifth Street (later 5th avenue) and finally to Market Street. Mr. Reed was for years a school director and also one of the Board of Inspectors of the Western Penitentiary. As a member of the Third United Presbyterian Church, he was regular and faithful in the discharge of his Church duty.
He eventually sold his interest in the store and business to his nephew, J. Allison Reed, and retired from active partnership in the firm of J. R. Reed & Co., but never relinquished his interest in the welfare of the company.
