He and his wife emigrated from Germany to the United States. [HWC 1882, 668]

The ancestor of the Rugh family came to America about 1680, settling in eastern Pennsylvania. His name was Michael Rugh. A member of the family went over the Allegheny mountains, settling in what is now Westmoreland County. [HWC 1906 II, 84]

He was born in Holland. He came to America between the years 1733 and 1737, and settled in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. Soon after his marriage he moved to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and settled on the site of the present city of Greensburg. He built the first house there, and was a prominent man. He moved from the eastern part of Pennsylvania to Westmoreland County in 1772, purchasing from the government four hundred acres of land, a portion of which was still in the possession of his descendants in 1905. Here he passed the remainder of his life. The family in all generations have been active members of the Lutheran church.

He came into the great forest regions west of the Alleghenies in 1772, erected his humble cabin about one mile below the site of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and three years later was compelled to erect a fortified building which was known as Rugh's Block House, as a protection against the frequent Indian incursions then being made against the frontier settlements of Westmoreland County. He patented four hundred acres of land. This tract he afterwards divided equally between his two sons, Hon. Jacob and Peter. [HBCWC, 689]
