General Notes: Husband - Hon. Edward Scull

He was engaged in mercantile pursuits early in life, and afterwards read law with Hon. Edgar Cowan, of Greensburg, Pennsylvania. About 1845 he removed to Somerset County, Pennsylvania, and shortly afterward established the Somerset Whig, and thereafter took an active interest in politics. He was an elector on the first Republican ticket in 1856, and served in the same capacity on other occasions. He was elected prothonotary of Somerset county, was appointed collector of internal revenue for the sixteenth district of Pennsylvania by President Lincoln, and afterwards served in the same capacity by appointment of Presidents Grant and Harrison. He was a member of congress for a number of terms from the Somerset districts.

He was born in Pittsburgh and moved to Somerset, Pennsylvania, in 1846, where he engaged in the practice of law. He became editor of the "Herald and Whig" in 1852, and for almost fifty years exercised a powerful influence in the county by the persuasiveness and vigor of his writing. In 1857 he was elected Prothonotary of Somerset County, and in 1886 was elected to represent his district in Congress. He was reelected in 1888 and 1890. In 1863 he was appointed collector of Internal Revenue for the Sixteenth District of Pennsylvania and several times was reappointed.
