He was reared in Lawrence township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, and was indebted to its public schools for his educational privileges. In his youth he assisted his father in farming and lumbering, and after attaining his majority followed the same pursuits in his own interest. Energetic and persevering, his labors were crowned with a fair degree of success, and he enjoyed comfortable circumstances. In 1881, he was elected town supervisor, on the Democratic ticket, and again in 1882. Once more he was elected in 1894, and served at least four terms in that office. He was a member of the American Mechanics Lodge, No. 281, of Clearfield, and the Knights of the Golden Eagle Lodge, No. 318, Clearfield.
