General Notes: Husband - Thomas McLaughlin
He was reared to adulthood in his native county, and after his marriage settled in Rocks Mills, Elk County, Pennsylvania, where he was foreman of an extensive lumber concern for the ensuing seven years. Subsequently he bought a farm in Knox township, Clarion County. He there engaged in diversified agriculture and the raising of high-grade stock.
He was a Republican in politics, and for two terms was jury commissioner of his county. He long served as a member of the school board, and prior to President Cleveland's administration was incumbent of the office of revenue judge for the federal government.
At the outbreak of the Civil War he and his brother Edward enlisted for service in Company C, Eighteenth Pennsylvania Cavalry. He was in the army during three years of the war, and participated in a number of important engagements marking the progress of that struggle.
His brother, John M., was a member of the Sixty-third Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and his brother Charles saw some service as a member of Company H, Tenth Pennsylvania Reserves.
